In 2004
De Indonesische beeldend kunstenaar
Eko Nugroho (1977, Yogyakarta), werkt momenteel als ‘artist in residence’ drie
maanden in het Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier (AGA). Recent nam hij deel aan de
Amsterdamse Kunstvlaai en leverde dagelijks een getekende column. Het werk van
deze jonge, actieve kunstenaar bestaat uit tekeningen, schilderijen,
installaties en animaties. Hij geeft twee keer per jaar in eigen beheer Daging
Tumbuh (= growing meat) uit. Het is een lowcost stripboek, waarin beeldende
kunst, het stripverhaal en sociaal-politieke betrokkenheid worden
verenigd.Tijdens de Stripdagen presenteert Nugroho zijn geborduurde
stripfiguren en Tram, zijn kunstenaarsboek met dagboekindrukken van zijn
verblijf in Nederland. Zijn geborduurde werk laat hij vervaardigen in speciale
borduurateliers en verwijzen naar emblemen, die in Indonesië op allerlei
uniformen te vinden zijn, als uitdrukking van macht en status. Nugroho
onderscheidt zich van de oudere generatie kunstenaars door zijn uitgesproken
houding inzake thema’s als politiek, oorlog, milieuverontreiniging, de
politiestaat.
