Laundry-Line (Dutch follow English)

The idea of treating the shirt collection as a project

began as a game.

The title ‘Laundry-line’ is a reference

to everyday (often invisible) actions.

Washing and drying clothes

is a recurring

necessary activity.

The laundry line can also serve as a display

for your clothing collection.

The garments hang out to dry

and perform at the same time.

The collection began with a few discarded shirts

belonging to my son Teide.

As a young adult, I used to wear my father’s jackets,

and later, jackets belonging to my son’s father;

now, I wear Teide’s shirts,

which feel as though I’m wrapping myself in them.

Why does it feel that way?

I learnt at a young age that clothes,

with the movements that go with them,

evoke emotional and pronounced reactions,

even in myself.

Later, I began to play with this,

wearing clothes that were considered strange within the family,

but were tolerated nonetheless.

Clothes such as men’s overcoats and

military clothing, which I found at flea markets in the 1970s.

Wearing clothes evokes a feeling,

with an association.

You find yourself naturally drawn to a particular garment.

A leather men’s jacket makes me walk with more confidence;

I feel resilient. In a tight-fitting dress, I sense

the traditional role expected of women

and feel a certain resistance.

In recent years, I began drawing

and painting about how moving in a dress

feels from the inside.

To do this, I had to develop a new approach to drawing.

The act of marking and painting the white shirts

ran parallel to the painting process.

For much longer, my wardrobe had contained

items of clothing that I had once altered

by other artists.

A white jacket (from a flea market) was altered by

the Clothing Advice Agency ‘Irreparably Improved’

(José den Hartog*) during Hoogtij (art trail) in The Hague.

In 2015 I took a shirt that was no longer quite white

to the art event Autonië** at the Binkhorst, The Hague,

where, amongst other things, you could have clothing

printed with car parts. I chose a car tyre tread

print on the back of the shirt (UF6)

Much later, I further altered the shirt

I wore this shirt in 2019

at an international art initiative fair in Athens

during a self-developed PlatformsForAll*** programme

and whilst hosting the EX-MÊKH

stand (‘Equilibrium’ ****)

I took the ‘Never The Same UF1’ shirt

with me to an A.I.R. at Arteventura in Spain (2025),

where it played a part at an old washing place

during the Brota El Pueblo art event

in Puerto Gill/Corteconcepcíon.

Another shirt UF2 Wrinkles

was, during the same *****Brota El Pueblo event,

washed and wrung out by visitors

as part of a performance by the Spanish artist Alicia Velazquez

and hung on the washing line.

This shirt was further reworked in The Hague

and formed part of two events at Quartair in 2026.

‘Unifying Furi’ and, following further reworking,

at the event ‘The Elemental Performances’.

Through this theme and ongoing project, I aim to draw attention to

the role that clothing and textiles play in our personal and social lives.

There are codes associated with clothing.

White shirts with starched collars are usually worn by people who identify

as men and wish to signal that they hold a certain status.

By taking a crisply ironed white shirt after its first use, wearing it again, painting on it,

and passing it on to a third, fourth and subsequent owners, I aim to explore how a garment and

behaviour are interconnected, and how that same garment, once altered,

can transform the experience of wearing it – not by denying its past,

but by incorporating it into a new life, thereby keeping the garment ‘alive’,

passing it on and allowing its story to grow.

I alter each garment with colours,

lines and words,

whilst thinking about its origins or

where I myself am at that moment,

and drawing inspiration from that.

In this way, notes and

names of authors, artists,

thinkers, scientists and ideas

that interest me find their way onto the fabric,

attaching themselves to the fibres

and in my mind.

Could it become a sort of ‘pass-it-on diary’,

but with clothing or textiles as the medium,

with stories in an archive accessible to everyone?

A public aide-mémoire.

For the time being, I’m offering the garments

as part of short-term projects.

Each shirt finds its place

in a suitable concept or project.

Het idee om shirt collectie als project

te beschouwen, begon als spel.

De titel waslijn is een verwijzing

naar dagelijkse (vaak onzichtbare) handelingen.

Wassen en drogen van kleding

is een terugkerende

noodzakelijke bezigheid.

De waslijn kan ook een een uitstalling

van je kleding collectie tonen.

De kledingstukken hangen te drogen

en performen tegelijk.

De verzameling begon met enkele afgedankte overhemden

van mijn zoon Teide.

Als jong volwassene droeg vroeger de colberts van mijn vader

en later jasjes van de vader van mijn zoon

weer later draag ik de overhemden van Teide

waarbij het voelt alsof ik me met ze omhul.

Waarom voelt dat zo?

Ik leerde al op jonge leeftijd dat kleding

met de bijbehorende bewegingen,

emotionele en uitgesproken reacties oproepen

ook bij mijzelf.

Later ging ik daarmee spelen,

droeg kleding die binnen de familie vreemd werd gevonden,

maar wel werd gedoogd.

Kleding zoals mannenoverjassen en

legerkleding vond ik op dump markten in de jaren '70.

Het dragen van kleding roept een gevoel op,

met een associatie.

Je gaat je als vanzelf naar een kledingstuk toe bewegen.

Een leren mannen jas laat me met grotere passen lopen,

ik voel me weerbaar. In een strakke jurk voel ik

de traditionele rol die van vrouwen verwacht wordt

en voel verzet.

Afgelopen jaren begon ik te tekenen

en schilderen over hoe het bewegen in een jurk

van binnenuit voelt.

Daarvoor moest ik een nieuwe aanpak van tekenen ontwikkelen.

Het betekenen, beschilderen van de witte overhemden

liepen parallel aan het schilderproces

Al veel langer hingen in mijn kledingkast

kledingstukken die ik ooit had laten bewerken

door andere kunstenaars.

Een wit jasje (uit de kringloop) werd bewerkt door

Kledingadviesbureau Onherstelbaar Verbeterd

(José den Hartog*) tijdens Hoogtij (kunstroute) in Den Haag.

Een niet meer helemaal wit shirt nam ik in 2015 mee

naar het Kunst-Event Autonië** in de Binkhorst, Den Haag,

waar je onder meer kleding met auto onderdelen

kon laten bedrukken. Ik koos voor een autobandprofiel

afdruk op de rug van het shirt (UF6)

Veel later bewerkte ik het shirt verder

Dit shirt droeg ik in 2019

op een internationale kunstinitiatieven

beurs in Athene tijdens

een eigen ontwikkeld PlatformsForAll*** programma

en tijdens het hosten van de EX-MÊKH

stand (‘Equilibrium’ ****)

Het overhemd Never The Same UF1

nam ik mee naar een A.I.R. in Arteventura in Spanje (2025)

waarbij het een rol kreeg bij een oude wasplaats

tijdens het kunst event Brota El Pueblo

in Puerto Gill/ Corteconcepcíon.

Een ander Shirt (UF2 Wrinkles)

werd tijdens hetzelfde event Brota El Pueblo

in een performance van de Spaanse Kunstenaar Alicia Velazquez

door bezoekers van het event gewassen

en aan de waslijn gehangen.

Dit shirt is verder bewerkt in Den Haag

en is in 2026 onderdeel van twee events bij Quartair.

Unifying Furi en na een nieuwe bewerking

bij het event The Elemental Performances.

Door juist een strak gestreken wit overhemd

na 1e gebruik over te nemen, opnieuw te dragen,

te beschilderen, 3e 4e en verder -hands te gebruiken,

wil ik onderzoeken hoe een kledingstuk en

gedrag met elkaar verbonden zijn en

hoe datzelfde kledingstuk na bewerking

de draagervaring kan veranderen door het verleden

ervan niet te ontkennen maar mee te nemen in een nieuw leven

en zo het kledingstuk in ‘leven ‘ te houden,

door te geven en het verhaal te laten groeien.

Ik bewerk elk kledingstuk met kleuren,

lijnen, woorden

waarbij ik denk aan de herkomst of

waar ik op dat moment zelf ben

en inspiratie uit haal.

Zo komen er notities en

namen van auteurs, kunstenaars,

denkers, wetenschappers en gedachten

die me interesseren op de stof terecht,

hechten zich aan de vezels

en in mijn hoofd.

Zou het een soort doorgeefdagboek kunnen worden

maar dan van kleding of textiel als drager,

met verhalen in een voor ieder vindbaar archief?

Een openbaar aide-mémoire.

Voorlopig bied ik de kledingstukken

tijdens korte projecten aan.

Elk shirt komt in een

passend concept/project terecht.

Shirt information

Materials: divers fabric, divers painting and drawing materials (acrylic paint, textile paint, marcers, textile markers)

Use&wash: wear, share or as wall piece, wash separate, inside out, doesn’t matter if colours disappear, it’s as life, iron while covering the shirt with other cloth, re-decorate if you feel like.
